WA to bring spirit to the upcoming underclassman dance

WA to bring spirit to the upcoming underclassman dance
Created by Katie McDermott

Westford Academy Student Council (STUCO) is hosting an underclassmen dance after the football game on October 20 from 8-10pm. WA Upperclassmen will be able to attend a second homecoming dance on October 21st, also set up by STUCO.

Last year there was a homecoming dance where all the grades were invited. However, with it being open to all the grades, many students missed out as there was high demand for a limited number of tickets. As fun as it was for everyone to be together, STUCO thought it would be smart to split the grades up this year.

“STUCO thinks it is a good idea because it includes freshmen and sophomores in their own dance,” senior STUCO member Leah Spinney said. “I think it is a good thing for freshmen to be involved and have the opportunity to go to a dance without the upperclassman.”

The week prior will be spirit week and Friday will be the spirit rally. From 3:45-5:45 pm on Friday, there will be a tailgate in the student parking lot for any clubs or classes to hangout, eat, and play games. In the hours leading up to the dance, students will be able to attend the football game against Chelmsford.

Though many students love to dress up for dances, this dance is a little different because it is directly after the football game. As the game’s theme will be white out, the people who will be attending the dance will go straight into the cafeteria wearing their spirit.

“[Students won’t] go change. It is not a formal, it is not a semi-formal,” Dean Betsy Murphy said. “It is just a good old fashioned […] dance after the football game.”

There was conversation between student council about having a more formal dance for the underclassman later in the year, but they realized having it now would be a good “welcome” for the freshman and “welcome back” for the sophomores.

“Mrs. Murphy wanted freshmen and sophomores to have a dance in the beginning of the year to get to know each other and become more a part of the school community,” Spinney said.

The main goal for this dance is for the underclassmen to have an opportunity to connect in a fun and relaxed way after an eventful week of spirit. Any underclassman that wants to attend after the game can just show up.

“If they want to do denim and diamonds go for it, but they do not need to wear a dress to the game in order to show up for a dance,” Murphy said.
