WA sports secure for future

By Sami Joubert

This year, a large percentage of the players on Westford Academy sports teams are seniors. Because of the large amount of seniors graduating, some students have expressed feelings that the future success of WA sports teams is destined to go downhill after this year. However, it appears that these theories are false, and that Westford will always be a strong force when it comes to sports.

Robert Conley, the director of athletics, contends that sophomores and juniors from the classes of 2011 and 2012 will be able to successfully fill the positions of the graduating seniors from this year in terms of participation and performance, even though teams will be losing such a large chunk of their athletes. The evidence, says Conley, is written in the past.

“Year after year, the amount of participation has stayed pretty steady,” said Conley. “As the baton gets passed from one class to the next, we will continue to be a very good and competitive program.”

In years past, students have been able to successfully surpass the marks and records left behind by their predecessors. In the bell lobby above the trophies, one can view records that have withstood the test of time, with some dating all the way back to the 80’s. However, it appears as though most records on the wall have been set in this decade, indicating that Westford Academy students have always been able to effectively fill in for athletes that have moved on.

This fall, it seems as though there is an abundance of seniors on varsity teams. There is no rhyme or reason why this is true, and it appears to be solely coincidence. In the 07-08 season, Westford Academy was ranked as the 5th best school for athletics in Massachusetts. This is a huge rise from previous years, where Westford was usually ranked 12th to 13th. This year, WA aspires to be ranked in the top ten once again.

“What seniors bring to Westford Academy is leadership and experience, and we look across the board at all the programs and you can identify in all sports seniors who are providing leadership,” said Conley.

i liked this article because it seems to me that most of the great players are leaving and most likely after this year WA sports are going to go down hill.
