Week one of the rec ball season started for the high school boys’ 10 to 12th league, and some teams came out with a bang. There were upsets, many blowouts and a few close wins of evenly matched teams.
Adam Ciampi and The Suns, easily handled The Knicks who were without two of their top players, 57-37.
The Pacers one of the teams I think will win the championship, defeated The Hornets in a blowout. The Hornets were frustrated during the game and this was shown when Senior Mark Mastandrea yelled “I’m sick of not getting rebounds” after a hustle play to save the ball led to a fast break layup by the other team. There was a final score of 58-38.
The marquee match up of the day was The Magic, lead by Peter Russo who scored 20 defeating the power house Barisano’s in the closest game of the day. The game was tied at 43 with 1:22 left in the game when The Magic scored 2 points, and would have a solid defensive stand stopping The Thunder, defeating them 45-43.
After the game Peter Russo said, “They were really good defensively and pestered us when we were on offense, but we were able to get it done in the end.”
These were two of the better teams in the league and they competed very well against each other, but in the end one of them had to lose.
The Cavaliers were blown out big time by 36 points by The Grizzlies. Senior Jack Krieg lead the way for the Grizzlies with 26 points, one of the highest outputs of the day, points wise. The final was 70-36, and senior Zach Ingalls was not happy with his team’s performance.
Also in this game John Troy made a play on the ball fouling Chris Underwood drove to the hoop; this was called a flagrant foul, and we would later find out Underwood broke his ankle on the play.
Another impressive win was The Wizards over The Jazz. The Wizards without Senior Pat Dugan upset The Jazz, 50-42. The Wizards hit many three’s and Junior Harrison Saro ran the offense really well at the point guard and helped the team get many open three’s which they hit.
The Mavericks lost to the Bulls, 38-42 in a close game in the final minutes.
The Pistons a team who looked good before their game, lost 60-38 in a big defeat.
After the game, Seamus Mckinney said, ” I was cold the entire night, but of course I hit a last minute half court three; that’s just the way the game was going.”
