Swim season is starting up again, but this year, Matt Tynan is a captain.
Tynan first began swimming at 6 years old, which gives him over ten years of experience. His earliest memory of swimming was moving here from Indiana at eight years old.
“When I moved here and started my team here, I didn’t like it very much,” Tynan says. “But my parents wanted me to keep going to practice. Then I started to like it.”
Tynan says his father played a big role in his swimming career. His father was previously a swimmer and had him try it. He is also his inspiration.
When asked who his role models are, Tynan said, “Probably my coaches right now. Whenever I wake up for practice before school they’re always there.”
Tynan holds many records and has received quite a few awards. Among those are high school captain, MVP, All American (which includes a 3.2 grade point average), and some summer league awards. Records he holds include school relay races and many summer league records. Tynan is mentioned in the September 2010 edition of Swimming World Magazine for the Massachusetts Long Course Championship for his first place High Point Finish. He is also planning on going to college to swim. He is looking at mid-major division 1 and top level division 3 schools.
According to Tynan, the 2010-2011 season should be a good one for the Grey Ghosts.
Team members are preparing for the upcoming season mostly by swimming for club teams, so they are practicing when they normally would not be during the team’s offseason. Tynan predicted the biggest competition for this season to be either Lincoln-Sudbury or Wayland.
Overall, Tynan is expecting a successful season for the swim team.
“[This season we should do] really well. We didn’t lose many seniors and a bunch of kids have been doing a club team. We’ll be pretty good.”
