On February 2nd, the WA Girls’ Basketball team finally defeated Cambridge R&L after losing to them 50 – 55 earlier this year. The girls ended up with a lead of seven points at the end of the game with a total score of 60 – 53.

During the first four minutes of the game, Cambridge stole the first two shots giving them a lead of four points. In the middle of the first quarter, WA shot their first basket, but not long after, Cambridge got another shot, causing WA to call a time out. As the buzzer let off, Angela Alibrandi shot and brought the final score for the first quarter 7-9, with Cambridge in the lead.

In the first few minutes of the second quarter, Alibrandi scored the first point tying WA with Cambridge, but WA was soon overtaken again. However, as the second quarter progressed, WA started leadingĀ  17 -14. As the quarter came to a close, WA was in the lead by five points, with scores at 24 to 19.

Third quarter was a very close battle between WA and Cambridge. The scores fluctuated between WA being tied with Cambridge, and WA leading by two points. Eventually in the first half of the third quarter, WA gained a five point lead over Cambridge. At the end of the third quarter, WA was leading with a total of 34 points, but Cambridge only had 31 points.

Coach Russ Coward was happy and proud of the way the girls played. He liked how their defense was stronger and that the team was much tougher towards the Cambridge girls.

Coward said, “We played very well. We played much tougher than I had hoped for. I was very proud of them.”

Co-Captains Madeline Russell and Camille Desrochers also had a positive reaction to how their team played today.

“I think we overall did pretty well. We could have worked on our boxing out, otherwise that was pretty good,” said Russell.
