Softball loses to Methuen 2-1

WA Softball took Martin Field in Lowell today to face off against Methuen, and in a call that upset many WA fans, lost the game 2-1 in the top of the seventh inning.

Starting off well, WA was able to score one run in the first inning, and kept this lead for three more innings. During this time, the WA fan section was ecstatic, as more and more Ghost supporters climbed onto the teachers to support the team.

Methuen finally made a move, scoring two runs in rapid succession in the fourth inning, and seized the lead from WA. The score remained 2-1 for the rest of the game, despite some excellent playing from the Ghosts.

The bottom of the fifth inning was especially excellent for the girls, as they were able to end Methuen’s turn at bat in less than five minutes with some excellent fielding.

Multiple times in the fifth and sixth innings, WA would have the bases loaded, and would come immeasurably close to making another run, but they were unfortunately stopped by good fielding from Methuen.

The top of the seventh inning was WA’s last time to shine. Being down 2-1, they needed to score at least once to keep the game going. The beginning of the inning was excellent for the girls, as some rapid consecutive hits brought senior Morgan Ross to third base. Junior Caroline Baggeroer stepped up to the plate, and hit the perfect sacrifice fly for Ross to run home and tie the game 2-2.

WA’s fan section cheered and whooped, hollering in excitement, when suddenly a hush fell upon the crowd as the umpire declared that Ross left third too early, and that the run did not count and that she was out. Cheers began to erupt from the Methuen side of the field, and while WA fans were originally disappointed, they soon also began to clap with excitement, as everyone was extremely happy with the way that the Ghosts played, and that they had made it all the way to the semi-finals.

While the Ghosts will not continue onwards in playoffs, they had an excellent season. Despite being declared as the 19th seed, WA still managed to power through all the way to the semi-finals, an accomplishment that they are proud of.
