The Westford Academy Boys’ Basketball team beat rival Acton-Boxboro on the road on Friday, January 2 with a final score of 57-51.
Senior captain Eric McCord started the game off for WA with a layup that began a lead that wouldn’t end all game, aside from one period of about ten seconds where the teams were tied. Despite WA having a strong control over both the defense and offense throughout the battle, the Colonials proved to be a worthy opponent.
WA had a very strong first quarter and put up 21 points, three times AB’s mere seven, but by the end of the second quarter, the playing field had leveled off as the gap decreased to a close 28-26.
In the quiet second quarter, the Ghosts were able to turn around and hold the Colonials to only three baskets in the third quarter after the rival made the score 30-30, WA ended the period on top at 42-37.
In an eventful fourth quarter, the team was able to hold on to the lead they commanded since the beginning. McCord and fellow captain Dan Cornelius were both strong on offense as they collected 11 points together.
With less than a minute on the game clock, the score stood at 54-49, but after four fouls between the two teams, the score rose to the final of 57-51.
