On December 23th 2014, Westford Academy’s Varsity wrestling team beat Acton-Boxboro by a whopping score of 45-5. Even with a lot of injuries that restrained some wrestlers from competing in today’s matches, the team pulled through with a strong victory in the end.
The first match started with Luke Donovan in the 113 pound weight category. He started off steady by putting his opponent in a headlock but then got grabbed by the legs. He was able to keep his balance and did not fall. The match ended with 4 bouts for him and 6 for his opponent and the score was 0-3.
As Andrew Piedrahita started his match, he dragged his opponent across the mat and eventually pinned him. He ended with 7 bouts in the 126 weight category.
“I was glad to see [Andrew] wrestle today” said Coach Matthew Tholand.
Co-Captain Austin Cournoyer had a rough start while his opponent wouldn’t let him get up. As the end drew near, he tackled the wrestler and won with 9 bouts while the other had 2. By the end of this match the score was 21-6 and he was in the 145 pound weight category.
It was Max Chernauskus’s first varsity win this year. He was put in a headlock for some time but got a second wind as he swung his opponent from the legs which lead him to victory. He ended with 6 bouts.
Co-Captain Adam Peternell had a quick round. By grabbing his opponent by the legs, he was able to knock him off balance and pin him. He ended with 2 bouts.
David Lizotte was injured and couldn’t continue his match after being slid around the floor by his opponent. He was in the midst of being pinned when he returned from the match.
“Overall, I think there were some really good matches today. It was really nice to see Max Chernauskus’s first varsity win. I consider it a good win if our team gets at least 43 points so today was nice” says Coach Tholand.
The wrestling matches were very successful and everyone was satisfied with the outcome. The team will continue to practice the rest of the season.
