Westford Academy’s Varsity Baseball team played rival Acton-Boxboro on May 14. Unfortunately the team lost to rival AB 5-0.
The first inning didn’t go swimmingly for the team as AB lead off hitter hit a ground rule double to start off the game. After that, back to back errors made by senior Dan Bodi and junior Dan Cornelius occurred, and AB took a 1-0 lead on WA.
AB came out swinging in the first inning, as they scored anther run by a sacrifice hit giving AB a two run lead. AB’s pitching was on par, as WA senior captain Shane Wright and senior Cam McDonald both struck out in the first inning.
The second, third, and fourth innings looked slightly more positive for WA, as they held AB to zero runs. Starting pitcher Luc LeBleu started to dial in after a rough first inning. Although LeBleu didn’t get a strike out at any point in the game, he pitched well against AB. LeBleu pitched 5 innings, allowing 4 runs, and 4 walks. LeBleu also got the loss for yesterday’s game.
WA’s bats were quiet in the first two innings. They were hitless until senior co-captain Bryce Macomber singled to center field. In an attempt to get Macomber to second base, junior Brian Anastas bunted. Not only did Macomber get to second base beating out the throw from the catcher, but Anastas reached first base safely.
Unfortunately the AB pitcher, who had eight strike outs during the game, struck out Cornelius and Wright, and forcing Bodi to ground out to first to end the third inning.
As the sixth inning started coach Corey Roman replaced pitcher Lebleu and put in junior Mitchell Mondro for the rest of the game. Mondro threw two innings as he held AB to only one run that occurred on an error in the outfield. He also helped the team by getting WA’s first strike out of the game. Mondro finished with two strike outs and two walks.
Roman was disappointed by the end result but tried to remain positive.
“Wasn’t one of our best defensive performances, but we still battled against a top notch pitcher. He’s a good pitcher, and he certainly showed it,” said Roman.
