A touch of reality

By Kathleen McAleese

High school is meant to serve as the transition years to smoothly allow students to pursue a new life after school, whether it be in college or a career, but so far, I do not feel like I have been adequately prepared in many aspects of my high school career.

So many students at Westford Academy are very book smart, but I am not confident that we have been given the skills to really achieve greatness. Financing, resume writing, managing college loans, and even taxes are skills that I will need for the future that I have not nearly been exposed to well enough, or at all.

The education of students is perhaps too stressed on a curriculum that is not relatable, producing students that are really good at regurgitating information that they will never use, while lacking all real world connection.

The list goes on and on when it comes to what I will not know how to do. Not every college freshman know how to wash and iron their clothes, email a professor professionally, medicate yourself when you are sick, or even simple handiwork skills. Some of these inabilities fall to the responsibility of the parents or student, but the point is still the same: there is a widespread ignorance when it comes to moving out and growing up.

I understand that teachers have limited time to teach their curriculum as it is and teachers may not be able to allot time in their curriculum for life lessons, but time spent seemingly wasted in Double A time would be the perfect time to learn a little bit about what I am in for after high school, because right now all I know is that college is not like where I am now.

This is a time where students sit in homeroom without anything to do for 20 minutes. This wasted time would be perfect for a lesson that doesn’t have to do with any class in particular. Even if a teacher isn’t teaching their homeroom serious life lessons, at this point, anything helps.
