Q: Why did you come to Westford Academy?
A: I think my best answer for that is I did go to school here. I graduated from Westford Academy in 2004 and my experience here was more then excellent. I really have always enjoyed school. Another really important reason was that I got to work next to the teachers as colleagues: they taught me and so I knew that would help my teaching ability as well, because they were very good teachers when they taught me and new teachers always need help and they are very good teachers.
Q: What did you do before you came to Westford Academy? Did you have any other job before this?
A: Yes, I came from a boarding school in Connecticut and my experience there was a much different then my experience here. The classes, are a lot smaller, the school is actually for emotionally and behaviorally challenged students, so they were there for a reason. I was also in the dorm room staff there. I was there for about six months, and made my way back to Massachusetts afterwards and searched around for teaching jobs.
Q: What Courses do you teach now?
A: Right now I have three CP chemistry classes. D, E, and F block are there right next to each other, I don’t have to move rooms either.
Q: Was there any reasoning for you becoming a science teacher?
A: Oh definitely, a lot. I started going to college to study pharmaceuticals actually, and I went to a pharmacy college. After awhile I realized the pharmacy college wasn’t for me. I wanted to have my own neighborhood pharmacy, but then companies like CVS and Walgreen’s would had bought it out, but teaching didn’t become an idea until one summer. My college advisor asked me to kind of help lead a summer camp for middle school kids. After summer science experimenting in the woods, digging holes, and capturing ants, they had a blast, and I had such a good time dealing with the middle school kids in a scholastic setting outside of school. I had such a great time. I knew that working with students would be fulfilling. That’s when I decided to get into an education program in college.
Q: Where did you go to college?
A: When I went to two colleges. Where was the Albany College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences, actually, there was an announcement this morning about a representative coming tomorrow. But after that, I transferred to Calvin College in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Great place to live, nice people there, but it’s a private school so it costs a lot of money.
