Olivia Rodrigo has been missing for three years. Not literally—the 23-year-old has made frequent appearances on social media—but album-wise.
Rodrigo’s last album, GUTS, was released in 2023, following her record-breaking debut album SOUR. Cynical Instagram posts had fans believing this third album would be called LOVE, following her four letter theme. However, the singer-songwriter has surprised fans with the 32-letter masterpiece that is you seem pretty sad for a girl so in love.

you seem pretty sad for a girl so in love blessed the world on June 12, 2026 with 13 tracks: seven for a girl so in love and six for seeming pretty sad. The album explores an interesting theme of sadness despite being in love. It is suspected that the seven songs under girl so in love take place during Rodrigo’s relationship with actor Louis Partridge while the six under you seem pretty sad occur during or after the end of the relationship. Instead of giving listeners whiplash from the different emotions, Rodrigo manages for the most part to keep a cohesive theme throughout the album. She masterfully uses not only her lyrics and vocals to convey emotion but background instrumentals and intonation as well.
The lead single on the album “drop dead” was released on April 17, 2026 and for many, including myself, has been on repeat since then. The perfect song for upbeat car rides, the song captures the essence of a teenage girl in love: “One night I was bored in bed / And stalked you on the internet.” During the second verse, Rodrigo creatively drops into a conversational, sing-song tone, speaking directly to her love interest. In the chorus, her vocals are layered and increase in intensity as the song progresses, mimicking the feeling of falling in love before shutting off abruptly at the end of the song. This variation of sound takes listeners on a roller coaster—one that makes them want to go again, not throw up. This track did receive a music video as well, filmed at the Palace of Versailles as a reference to one of the lines in the song: “You’re looking like an angel on the walls of Versailles.”
The second song on the album is titled “stupid song”. Luckily, this song is anything but. Falling under the girl so in love section, “stupid song” takes a page out of “drop dead”‘s book and does it better. Each section of the song increases in intensity, as does the song itself. This pattern is most easily recognizable during each chorus. “stupid song” is once again about a girl completely losing it while falling in love. Rodrigo sings “I feel right, I feel wrong, I feel totally insane / And I want you more than any stupid song could ever say,” and the song makes listeners feel like they’re going insane right along with her. The song culminates in a very pop rock-coded bridge and with an ample serving of drums before, like “drop dead”, cutting off at the end. “stupid song” is without a doubt an upbeat ear worm that won’t be leaving anyone’s playlist any time soon.
“honeybee” is the sweetest song on you seem pretty sad for a girl so in love and a personal favorite by far. Although it is still part of girl so in love, the album’s third track carries a very subtle hint of melancholy. In it, Rodrigo details her love for her partner. “honeybee” is a beautiful work, with piano and a perfectly placed orchestra pulling her soft, airy vocals together. “And I hope I never see what your face looks like going / A face I swear that I could spend my whole live knowing / Here’s to hoping,” Rodrigo sings in the chorus. Notably, the background vocals on this track are sung by fellow singer-songwriter Conan Gray, who recently released a love/heartbreak album of his own, Wishbone. The bridge at the end of the song is a redone version of the chorus, mimicking a flawlessly in-tune choir. The softness of this song manifesting in the vocals, the lyrics, and especially the instrumentals is enough to bring tears to anyone’s eyes; “honeybee” screams love in the most gentle way possible.
The tenth track is the only feature on the album, and a very well-chosen one at that. “what’s wrong with me” is one of the songs under the you seem pretty sad section of this project and features renowned artist Robert Smith. This song encapsulates the meaning of the album—how can someone in love be sad? Rodrigo sings “My head is spinning and my stomach is sick / Say I’m in love, so it’s hard to admit / I can’t eat, I can’t sleep / I think you’re what’s wrong with me.” “what’s wrong with me” shows the realization Rodrigo has, that perhaps her partner is the reason why something is wrong. Rodrigo’s and Smith’s vocals pair together wonderfully, so listeners are in for a treat during the chorus and the bridge where the two sing together. The stars of this show are the intonation and pacing of Rodrigo’s and Smith’s vocals creating an interesting and very audibly pleasing sound. “what’s wrong with me” provides a solemn, but fitting contrast to the other half of the album.“cigarette smoke” is the thirteenth, last, and longest song on you seem pretty sad for a girl so in love at a whopping five minutes and 40 seconds. This track, on the you seem pretty sad section, is about the process of Rodrigo getting over her ex despite them lingering like cigarette smoke. More than anything, this song displays Rodrigo’s lyrical prowess more so than any other on the album. “Give me back my time and I will give you back your heart / I thought that we played the perfect couple / ‘Til you didn’t want the part,” Rodrigo sings during the chorus. “cigarette smoke”, like “honeybee”, capitalizes on stringed instrumentals to hit the nail on the head. The intensity of Rodrigo’s vocals increasing drastically during the end of the bridge is a stark contrast to the soft, quiet outro: “Tell me something honest so the memories turn dark / Oh, the memories turn dark.” A heartachingly beautiful song, “cigarette smoke” is a perfect finish to this album.
Aside from these top five songs, you seem pretty sad for a girl so in love proudly presents other outstanding tracks, three of which being “maggots for brains”, with its vivid imagery and symbolism; “the cure”, with its unique sound; and “begged”, for its iconic vocals.

you seem pretty sad for a girl so in love is arguably Rodrigo’s best album so far, a claim not stated lightly considering the level of greatness she has achieved with both SOUR and GUTS. The sheer variety of each track and the careful consideration of all elements of a song has shown incredible leaps in Rodrigo’s talent and skill. Unfortunately, the impossibly high bar that each song on this album sets make one specific track, “purple”, audibly fall short in comparison.
Rodrigo’s three-year long hiatus has increased the quality of her music tenfold, which is a fair price to pay—although it leaves fans clamoring for more. A deluxe version of you seem pretty sad for a girl so in love is heavily anticipated among many. If you enjoyed The Secret of Us by Gracie Abrams or Wishbone by Conan Gray, you will undoubtedly enjoy you seem pretty sad for a girl so in love.
