WA Girls’ Basketball beat Lowell High School in their season-opening scrimmage on Monday, Dec. 15 at 5:30 p.m., winning three out of the five total periods.
Since the face-off was a scrimmage, the score would restart every two quarters and the win was based on who won more plays. However, according to senior captain Olivia Pillsbury, the scrimmage created an opportunity for the team to evaluate lineups, communication, and execution ahead of their regular season.
The Ghosts set the tone early by applying consistent defensive pressure and maintaining strong communication on the court. Players were vocal in calling the ball, and coordinated their movements, helping the team stay organized and limiting breakdowns. WA controlled the opening stretch of the scrimmage and claimed the first two quarters with a combined score of 26-7, maintaining a steady possession and offensive flow.
“We did a really good job boxing out and talking on and off the floor especially in the first two quarters,”Pillsbury said. “We have a good team spirit and supportive sideline which really motivated us, especially during quarters three and four.”
The momentum of the game shifted in the second half of the scrimmage as Lowell responded with consistent scoring. Across the last two quarters, Lowell applied offensive pressure, challenging WA’s defensive adjustments. Lowell came in with a 33-25 comeback during the third and fourth quarters, leaving the scrimmage at a tie before the start of the fifth period.
“We started out really great and Lowell gave us a tough match but we stayed calm and didn’t stress out,” junior Emma Pavao said. “I think as a whole we do a good job of being patient and supportive even during our hard times.”
Meanwhile, junior Alexa Coward remained active on both ends of the court throughout all five periods, applying defensive pressure and taking multiple shots on offense as WA’s lineups changed.
In the final section of the game, the Ghosts responded with a strong finish, outscoring Lowell. During this period, energy remained consistently high, and substitutions allowed the team to maintain their pace without disrupting the flow of the game.
“It was really nice securing the win for tonight especially after we made a comeback in quarter five,” senior captain Kaitlyn Pepin said. “It really set the tone for the season and gave us a chance to look at what we could improve on.”
WA Girls’ Basketball’s next game will be at home against Billerica Memorial High School on Tuesday, Dec. 23 at 5:30 p.m.
