Britta Cianciolo has always had a love for field hockey. By watching two of her older sisters play the sport in both middle and high school, and then getting involved herself during middle school, she developed a passion for the sport.
Cianciolo was shocked to find out she had made the varsity team because she is only a freshman.
“After it finally sank in during a scrimmage, I was extremely excited for the opportunity to practice and play with the older girls,” said Cianciolo.
Although she is the only freshman on the team, Cianciolo said she feels perfectly comfortable with all the girls on the team.
“I have a great relationship with the rest of my team. The other girls immediately welcomed me,” she said. ” The captains and my coach really helped me get to know everyone and become a part of the team .”
Senior captain Abbie Scott feels that Britta has taken on a lot of responsibility as not only the only freshman but also as a goalie at the varsity level.
“The amount of effort that she has shown is incredible and irreplaceable,” said Scott.
In addition to her skills, Scott said Britta always keeps the team laughing, which is another positive trait.
Besides her age, Cianciolo also is getting attention for having her older sister, junior Annika Cianciolo, on the team as well. She said it has been nothing but positive having Annika on the team with her. In fact, they even play the same position.
“Having my older sister with me has really helped me…she is always looking out for me and making sure I can keep up with the older girls. We always have fun together at practices, because we play the same position of goalie,” said Britta. “She always finds a way to make the best out of any tough drills and gives me tips on how to play better.”
Annika said she was thrilled for Britta to make the varsity team and that it is a very unique aspect to have Britta playing with her.
“It’s very different, but we have a lot of fun together. Practicing with her is so entertaining and awesome,” said Britta. “Being sisters, there’s always arguing but we have become really good friends and teammates.”
Although Britta started off the season feeling a little nervous, she is excited to be able to practice with the varsity team and is looking forward to her skills improving.
“I am extremely excited to continue being a part of WA field hockey and getting to know my teammates even better, and to have an excellent season with my team,” said Britta.
