Current Events with Mark Fingerhut and Paul Perrone

By Ethan Walshe

Mark and Paul share a chuckle as they find the humor in everything

This year, the morning announcements at Westford Academy are featuring a little something different. Every Thursday morning seniors Mark Fingerhut and Paul Perrone sit behind the desk at the WABC studio for their new show Current Events.

“Our friend Bobby Esposito said ‘You know, the announcements, they aren’t good this year’” said Fingerhut, “you guys are so funny, so handsome so charismatic, so beautiful that you deserve your own show, and we said yeah” Perrone added. “And we went to Mr. Miller and we’re like, ‘Let’s do current events’ and the rest is history” Fingerhut continued.

The show features several short segments including the number one song in America, local news stories as well as national news stories.

“We do whatever comes to us. We do whatever’s interesting. It happens weekly,” said Fingerhut.

While the show does report on actual topics, and sometimes those of a serious variety, the hosts make many jokes along the way, finding some kind of humor in whatever topic is at hand on that day.

Mark Fingerhut said “we find the humor in every situation. Sometimes it’s in bad taste, but we can find anything to laugh at.” “And I think that’s important to do, you need to find the humor in everything or else people would really be unenjoyable” added Perrone.

The students, both seniors will obviously be leaving Westford Academy after this year, which could propose the question, who will do Current Events after they have graduated? And apparently, the answer is no one.

“This is a one time thing!” Fingerhut said, hitting his fist against the table “it is going to be cancelled after this year because, who else could do it? No one. No one!” Perrone added, finish Fingerhut’s sentence.

According to the hosts of the show, it has caused some controversy. It has been reported that a few spots on the show have insulted some people.

“[For example] the white shoed bandit, people were extremely scared in their classroom watching that because they lived on those streets.” Perrone said.

The students said that they like to compete with the sports broadcasters show on Fridays with their show by simply trying to be better.

“Were allied with the sports kids. We have a couple tricks up our sleeves [for the sports broadcasters]” said Perrone “we want to show solidarity with our WABC brethren.”

The show airs every Thursday morning following the morning announcements on WABC.
