With the promotion of Dan Twomey from dean to principal, Amanda Welch has taken the position as the new dean of students and sophomore class dean. The Ghostwriter had the opportunity to walk around WA with Welch and learn more about her.
Q: How has your experience at WA been so far?
A: It has been so great. Everyone here is nice, welcoming, and really invested in the community.
Q: What’s your favorite thing to do outside of school?
A: I love reading, spending time with my kids, and playing softball.
Q: Who is a person you admire and why?
A: I would have to say both of my kids. They both learn very differently and have learned to adjust to school in their own way, and make sure they are successful.
Q: Do you have a favorite season?
A: The summer. I actually love the beach, so it has nothing to do with not being in school.
Q: If you were stranded on a deserted island, what are three things you would bring?
A: I would bring my wife and my two kids.
Q: Do you have any funny childhood memories you would like to share?
A: I remember one day getting off of the school bus, and somebody calling my name from behind me and going, “Amanda, Amanda!”And I turned to look who it was, but kept walking, into a telephone pole or some metal pole. But, I laughed it off and kept going.
Q: If you could be any animal, what would it be and why?
A: I’m going to give you two. I think being a bird would be amazing because you can see everything from an aerial view, but I love the water so maybe a shark too, just to be in the ocean.
Q: If you could be in any movie or TV show, what would it be and why?
A: I would pick Game of Thrones, but only if I was the queen.
Q: What was your favorite subject in school growing up?
A: English.
Q: What was your least favorite subject?
A: I had a very hard time with math because there was always one way of doing it, and I never learned well with that kind of structure. [Whereas] in English, you have multiple ways of succeeding.
Q: Who is your favorite musician?
A: Eminem.
Q: What is your dream travel destination?
A: I was actually born in Korea, [so] I would love to go back someday. But I don’t speak the language so it’s a little nerve wracking for me to go back, but someday would be great.
Q: What is your favorite summer activity?
A: Playing softball.
Q: What is something that you want to learn how to do?
A: I would love to learn how to sing but no one actually wants to hear me sing, I’m horrible at it.
Q: How would you describe yourself in three words?
A: I am outgoing, I love communication, and I’ll go with athletic.
Q: If you could travel back in time, where would you go?
A: The Renaissance. Renaissance England to be specific.
Q: If you could have front row seats to any concert, what would it be?
A: Eminem still.
Q: Who is your favorite disney character?
A: I really like Dory but she’s a fish, and obviously I’m not a fish, so I guess I’ll pick Mulan.
Q: What is your biggest pet peeve?
A: I do not like it when I can hear people eating, like chewing loudly.
Q: What is the best book you have read recently?
A: I did recently read First They Killed My Father. It was probably about two years ago, but it really resonated with me.
Q: What was your dream career growing up?
A: I wanted to be an actress.
Q: If you could have any superpower, what would it be?
A: I would love to be able to speak every language ever known or created. That would make it a lot easier to communicate with everyone in the world.
Q: What is your biggest fear?
A: Seeing my kids upset or hurt is definitely something I worry about everyday.
