After a 12-4-2 record last year, the 2023 field hockey team is ready to take on the season. Led by Coach Cheri Fisher and senior captains Katie Carroll, Autumn Humphrey and Ally Lombardo, the team is hoping to make it as far as they can in the Dual County League (DCL).
This is going to be an eventful season for WA girls field hockey. Although the team lost 11 seniors last year, new underclassmen have brought talent to the team, according to Carroll.
“I am looking forward to bonding with the new girls on the team, especially the underclassmen who have never been on a varsity team before,” Carroll said.
According to Fisher, the team has been off to an impressive start, with a season record of 1-1.
“So far they are looking good. We had two very competitive games upfront with Chelmsford and Nashoba who […] are very tough teams,” Fisher said “We played much better against them than expected so I think we’ve got some potential in us this season.”
As exciting as it is to have many new players, the team will have to keep up with tough competition, according to Carroll. WA is looking to stay consistent with having high energy, clean play and communication throughout this season.
Last season was filled with upperclassmen and captains that showed their leadership throughout the season. Coach Fisher made it clear that she expects the same from this year’s captains.
“They need to be very strong leaders with this group,” Fisher said. “Especially getting everyone to meld as the season progresses.”
One of the biggest goals for the team this year is to get to the state tournament so the girls get to experience competing at a higher level. Although it may entail a few losses along the way, Fisher hopes the team will be ready to reach their post-season goals.
“I think we are going to have some tough opponents, especially in the DCL, but if we can keep up the good energy and clean play we should come out with a bunch of wins,” Carroll said.
