The WA Ghosts tied with the Billerica Indian Heads 3-3 Saturday night after both teams battled back and forth for domination of the ice.

The game started off in WA’s favor when in the first two minutes of game time, senior captain Michael Mucci scored a goal on Billerica. For the next seven minutes, both teams had a hard time getting shots in the other’s net. Most of this time was spent in center ice, and whenever the puck did manage to cross over into one team’s side, it was usually quickly met with a defensive player for that team and sent back towards the center.

This stalemate continued until the five-minute mark, when Billerica was given a two-minute penalty on one of its players. Within ten seconds of the penalty being called, junior Jason Bunyon made an incredible slap-shot on Billerica’s net, bringing WA’s lead to two. However things quickly turned in Billerica’s favor when in the last three minutes they put an incredible amount of stress on WA’s net. It was only the skillful goaltending of senior Joseph Cornetta that was able to stop Billerica from gaining any ground. At the two-minute mark, Cornetta managed to stop a flurry of over three consecutive shots.

By the end of the first period, WA had complete domination over Billerica, with a score of 2-0.

The second period started off with a hard push against Billerica by WA, with most of the first four minutes being spent on Billerica’s end. However this offense was stunted when, at the eleven-minute mark, Billerica managed to rally and score a goal on WA. The next ten minutes were tense, with many shots taken against both teams’ goalies. One of WA’s shots came so close to scoring that the only thing stopping it was the post.

Things again took a turn against WA when at 1:40, WA was given a two-minute penalty. In the last twenty seconds of the period, Billerica once again manage to score on WA after shooting a shot that narrowly missed Cornetta’s head, skimming by him into the net.

The period ended with Billerica managing to turn the game into a nail-biter, where just about anything could happen in the last fifteen minutes. The high pressure that Billerica was able to turn on WA was evident through the number of shots they got on WA’s net, with the Indian Heads getting 16 shots in the period as compared to the Ghosts 9.

The third period opened with ferocious fighting from both WA and Billerica. However, by the ten-minute mark, WA had regained the edge, with most of the next five minutes being played on Billerica’s ice. WA shot ten times at Billerica’s net in this time, and it was from one of those shots that junior Kyle Wizst scored another incredible slap-shot goal against Billerica.

The next four minutes saw Billerica pull their goalie in a desperate attempt to tie the game. This last-minute decision worked, and Billerica was able to once again tie the game by the one-minute mark.

Without any overtime, the teams tied at 3-3, with a hard-fought comeback by Billerica, and a consistent quality of teamwork from WA.
