Sean Doherty is one of Westford Academy’s best nordic skiers. He started skiing back when he was in seventh grade.
“My dad was into the sport, so he started to teach me in seventh grade, and I have been skiing ever since [then]” Doherty said.
Doherty’s dream is to ski for a varsity skiing team in college, and he thinks that it is not a very realistic option, yet if he keeps working hard for the next year, He might to meet the requirements.
“My dream is to ski for a varsity ski team, but right now I’m not sure if that is a super viable option. So, I hope if I work really hard for the next year, I will be able to meet the times and requirements to ski on varsity skiing” Doherty said.
Doherty recently came in 6th place in the state nordic race, which is a big improvement over his placement the previous year.
“I was super excited [since] last year I came in 11th, and I missed placing top ten by 4 seconds. I was definitely super dedicated to placing top ten this year, and I worked super hard and I’m glad it paid off as well as it did” Doherty said.
Outside of skiing, Doherty is part of many different activities that keep him busy.
“In the fall I run cross country for the team here. I like to go hiking in the summer, and I also am involved with my church group, and I am also in the orchestra here” said Doherty.
As it pertains to the next season of nordic skiing, Doherty notes that despite the team losing some seniors next year, there have been a lot of great new additions to the team as well.
“Well, there have been lots of great new skiers on the team that has a ton of talent. So, we definitely have a solid base. […] I am confident that we will still have a great composition to the team” Doherty said.
