Ride drives into WA black box
October 27, 2016
On Thursday, October 27th at 3pm, another Black Box theater production, Ride, will hit the stage. The production by Eric Lane will be directed by WA senior Emily Trantanella.
According to Trantanella, the play follows the journey of three teenagers on a road trip, and the deeper issues of their lives, such as the physical and emotional journeys of their lives. Trantanella says this play contains both elements of humor and drama.
The actresses for the show are Victoria Andrews, Emily Blagg, and Jaramie Cataldo.
Furthermore, Trantanella and her actors have been preparing for this play since back in early September. However, she found out that she was directing this production back in early June. According to Trantanella, they have rehearsed for the production every week since early September.
In order to select the actors, Trantanella held auditions to see who would best fit in her production.
According to Trantanella, after the first auditions, she called back all of the girls who were eligible freshmen and sophomore women actresses. She then held callbacks and looked at who worked well together and who she wanted to work with for the next few months.
Additionally, Trantanella added that she chose Ride because of the cast she wanted and the fact that she really liked the play.
“I knew that I wanted an all-women play and those are pretty hard to find. So I was looking for those and then one of my friends, she’s a freshman in college, she gave me the play and she was like ‘I think you’ll really like this,’ so I read it and I realized it was perfect […],” Trantanella said.
Trantanella also added that she felt the play was a perfect balance between comedy and serious issues.
“It was a play that I felt has a message that should be heard,” she said.
Also, aside from directing the play herself, Trantanella also admits that she is excited for the actresses who will be performing in the play and for people to watch her production.
“It’s such a special experience to perform in the black box. I’m excited for my friends and family to see what I’ve been working on, and I’m just excited for every single moment that I have left because every single moment is another moment of growth for all of us […],” she said.
As for this particular production, Trantanella says that this some unique qualities compared the previous black box shows. This one, she says, is much more minimalistic.
“[…] Black box productions are minimalistic, but ours is extremely stripped down for set, and costumes, and props, and everything. I think it’s one of the more minimalistic things I’ve seen, or experienced in the theater […]. There is a lot of concept that I put into it and I think the concept of my play makes it unique,” Trantanella said.
Along with the 27th, Ride will also be shown on the 28th, November 3rd, and November 4th. It will be shown at 3 and 7pm, and tickets are five dollars.
