Westford Academy’s Girls’ Varsity Tennis team defeated Acton- Boxborough, 3-2,  yesterday afternoon at Westfit in Westford and are now headed off to their fifth year at the the M.I.A.A. North Finals.

The game had been postponed from Tuesday to Wednesday due to impending weather concerns.

The teams began with three singles matches and two doubles matches. Juniors Veronica Opp, Claire Yu and Sindhu Kosuru played against AB in singles matches, with Captain Sydney Kim and Junior Andee Song along with Manisha Ramprasad and Victoria Donescu playing in doubles.

Playing in third singles, Kosuru lost the match fairly early in the game, 1-6 and 0-6 against Pragathi Maroju. However, both Opp and Yu won their first set and engaged in an extensive match against their AB counterparts at the time. Luckily, both juniors won both their matches and set the team towards victory.

Coach Tracy Capone admitted a little tension for Yu’s match, as Yu faced off an unfamiliar opponent.

“[Yu] hadn’t played [Acton-Boxborough’s Jagruthi Maroju] before, so we didn’t know what was [going to] happen there because we know [Marjou] was going to be a tough opponent. But for [Yu] to [win both sets, 6-4 and 6-2] was just fantastic.”

Even with Kosuru’s loss, Capone said the game would have been more of a challenge without her.

“Had [Kosuru] not been there, the lineup would have had to change, the matches would [have] been off and things could have been a disaster,” Capone said.

In separate courts, the doubles at one point had a score of 2-1 at the same time in both of their second sets. However, the second doubles team had won their first set while the first were down by one.

Eventually, Captains Kim and Song defeated the rivals in both sets, 6-4, 6-2.

The game came to a standstill as the final ongoing doubles match with Donescu and Ramprasad entered a tiebreaker. They lost 11-9, but the Grey Ghosts won the overall match by 3-2.

“This was one of the best matches of the season, if not the best. The doubles really, you know, they were both playing with new partners and really stepped up and played different strategies,” Capone said.

The girls will head off to challenge Lexington tomorrow for the M.I.A.A North Finals match. Capone describes the team as a formidable opponent, but believes in the team to bring their A-game. Similar to the one they brought last night.

“Anytime you can beat AB, it’s a good win,” Capone said.
