After four years of teaching at WA, Mishka (Michael) Vincze, the Latin teacher, will be leaving and moving to New York.

Vincze teaches several levels of Latin, in addition to running Latin club. “He was a great teacher and was liked among all his colleagues. He was very knowledgeable in his field and he will be missed.” Sarah Bjorkman, his fellow Latin teacher, said.

Vincze is moving to New York and will be teaching at Saint Peter’s Prep in Jersey City, New Jersey. Vincze is very excited about the move and that the “Latin program is a little bit bigger,” therefore having more Latin teacher colleagues.

Vincze is planning to move “probably at the end of July. There is no specific date just yet.”

“I’ve been in a long distance relationship for about a year now, so my boyfriend and I will be moving in together. And I’ve also taken a new position at a new school”.

Vincze, however, is sad about leaving Westford. “I will miss the students here. I’m really gonna miss my colleagues, like the other foreign language teachers”.

At this point, most of his students know about his move. His fellow foreign language colleagues also know about it too.

Moving to New Jersey will be a major change for Vincze. “It will be a very different way of living. Smaller spaces, but definitely a lot of things to do,” he said.

His students describe Vincze as someone who was a great teacher. He “takes the time to know his students and he’s so smart,” junior Kate Cotter said.

Junior Ian Martel agreed. “I was pretty sad because he is definitely one of my favorite teachers here at the school now. He’s a really nice person and one of the main reasons that I’ve been able to pass Latin. You could tell that he cared about what his students wanted to know and he definitely made sure everyone was fully up to snuff when it came to teaching subjects,” Martel said.

Vincze hopes that he has left a message for all of the Latin students that “people have found studying Latin to be academically vigorous, but also enjoyable. And I hope that that sort of spirit of studying Latin stays. That it is fun and enjoyable, but it is also a challenge.”
