Fashion club showcases student styles

The Ghostwriter has another publication to contend with at WA. Halcyon, WA’s student run premiere fashion club, is making waves at WA.
Created by juniors Victoria Lee, Lily Shan, Esther Kim and Janice Kim, Halcyon aims to showcase the different fashion trends of the time, and give an opportunity for students of the fashion club to have an opportunity to write about fashion that they like.
“We started it last year as kind of a casual thing, it wasn’t connected to the school at all. Us two (Shan and Lee), and Esther Kim and Janice Kim would go to someone’s house and take pictures and come up with article ideas, stuff like that,” said Shan.
While the magazine was initially created just for the purpose of giving these girls an outlet for expressing their tastes in fashion, it quickly developed into something more, and needed a name fitting of that characteristic.
“I got the name from Ellie Goulding’s album name, which is called Halcyon, which is so pretty. I looked up what the word was and it means something like looking back in the past and remembering good memories, so i was like, yea that’s a nice name and it sounds really pretty,” said Shan.
Halcyon not only serves as a way for these girls to talk about issues with fashion, but gives them the opportunity to write about whatever they want to, whether that be sticking to fashion news, or even current events.
Eventually, the group realized that the magazine was a lot to handle, and decided to give other students who may be interested in helping out a chance to work on the publication, creating WA Fashion Club.
“We just put it with the club because we felt like it was a lot of work to do it on our own, so now its affiliated with the school. It hasn’t really changed much, what we do, its the same. It’s called WA Fashion Club officially, but the magazine is still called Halcyon,” said Lee.
The magazine does not focus simply on one style either, as the club’s variety in members contributes to the unique style of the fashion and writing topics published.
“We do a mixture of both [retro styles and current trends], just stuff that represents us. We definitely do current trends, but a lot of times current trends are things that were trendy before,” said Lee.
The group also wants to encourage all who may be interested in joining to give the club a shot, despite what preconceived notions they may have about fashion.
“We try and tailor it so that it fits the people who do come to the club, and let them write about what they want to write about. The magazine is not something that is set in stone, and we do like having a variety in members, because it creates a variety of styles,” said Lee.
While the club continues to help Halcyon grow with their own photoshoots and writing, they look to the world for influence.
“Fashion is always affected by things around the world, and what happens around the world is always a big part of fashion,” said Lee.
