On Friday, October 2nd, WA Girls’ Volleyball took another victory from Boston Latin, winning with a full shut out 3-0.

Before the game had even begun the players were in the zone, as Boston Latin took almost an hour to arrive at WA. During that time the team was practicing vigorously, as they have been on an unfortunate losing streak for the past three games.

“Hopefully this game will build up their confidence and bring up their morale. In these last three games we could have easily won them, but we didn’t play up to the par of the competition. We are a very young team, but hopefully we will overcome that wall of experience and win more,” said Brandon Eang, the coach, before the game began.

WA has defeated Boston Latin multiple times in the past for Girls’ Volleyball, so most of the team was quite confident in their ability to pull out a win and end their losing streak.

Jumping right into the first set they showed their drive, taking a very large lead in the first half with a score of 15-7. They continued this lead until Boston Latin was forced to call a second time out when the score was 20-8, with WA having more than double their opponents’ points. The girls continued their strong play to finish out the set 25-13 shortly after.

The second set was a more even one than the last, with the teams having a very close game until WA took a slight lead to make it 11-7. After their gain on Boston Latin, the girls could not and would not stop scoring, and eventually closed out the set 25-17, bringing the overall score to 2-0.

The third set began strong for WA, with the girls scoring five points in a row before Boston Latin even had a chance to fight back, and soon the score was 6-2, with WA’s morale and energy causing an eruption of applause from the crowd. However, Boston Latin managed to close the gap quickly, bringing the score to 7-7, before WA began to dominate with a long streak of excellent serves and hits to make the score 17-9. The girls then closed out the set, and the game, triumphantly with a 25-14 score.

“Hopefully we can continue the momentum for the next game against Concord Carlisle, and they rank undefeated they are number one, so that’s the team to beat,” said Eang happily after the game.

Overall, the entire team played well, with many players getting a chance to participate in the game more than they normally would.

“It was good to get all of the girls in, and they all played really well; I was really proud of them,” said senior co-captain Emily Graziani.

One of the standouts on the team was junior Angela Alibrandi, who had an astonishing 9 hits and 4 blocks that all resulted in points.

“I think we communicated well, and we definitely had a lot of good digs and passes, and everything was just working for us today,” said Alibrandi, dispensing the success to the rest of the team’s skills and compatibility.

Overall, this game did what it was supposed to do; get the girls used to being victorious again, so that they can take their energy and confidence into some of the tougher games ahead.

The girls will play their next game against Concord Carlisle on Monday, October 5th, at WA. Despite Concord Carlisle being undefeated so far, the girls are confident in their ability to play well, and maybe even grab another victory.

“I think that we are a good enough team to take them, I think our confidence was low, I think we had to get used to losing, and our momentum is back up and we can take them,” said senior co-captain Catherine Grondine.
