Freshman Mary Cadogen

While most freshmen are simply adjusting to the high school setting, Mary Cadogan’s strikingly good soccer skills have landed her a spot on WA’s girls varsity team.

Since soccer is a prominent aspect of Westford culture, Cadogan has been driven to play soccer since the first grade. She joined club soccer, where new and returning players can further develop their skills, and now is enthusiastic to be a part of the varsity team at WA.

“Making varsity has been my [greatest achievement] so far in the sport,” said Cadogan.

She cannot pinpoint her strengths personally, but her teammates state that Cadogan is a strong striker.  This position is the player situated nearest to the opposing team’s goal. Her responsibility is to score goals and create scoring chances for other players.

“She’s good at soccer and [in the last game] she scored two goals–one in the first game and the second in the second game. She’s good at getting balls out of the air and [in] the net,” said Cadogen’s friend and teammate, Caroline Sawrey.

Over the summer, the girls varsity soccer team went to Seabrook, New Hampshire at a beach house for a team bonding session before the season began. Cadogan said that she developed better relationships with her teammates.

“I like my teammates and my coaches [as well],” said Cadogan.

With cooperation and better communication, Cadogan is looking forward to helping continue their original winning streak despite a loss against Newton South.  Cadogan will remain a striker and hopes to improve her defense. She implies that this will be attainable through the team’s daily intense training after school.

In addition to soccer, Cadogan plays basketball, softball and lacrosse.   During the winter, she plans to try out for basketball, and she is still deciding which sport to play for the spring.
