On Monday, May 4th, the WA Baseball team hosted Weston High School. They lost with a final score of 8-4, making it their second loss in two games. The starting pitcher for the Ghosts was Colin Eddy.
The bats came out strong for Weston in their half of the first inning. They hit both a single and a double, and both of these runners would come around to score to give Weston the early 2-0 lead. However, WA would respond with a run as Dan Cornelius was driven home by a sacrifice fly to center field by Scott Callahan. This made the score 2-1 after one inning of play.
The second inning was quiet as neither team got any runs across. However, in the bottom of the third inning, the Ghosts got their bats going. The inning started with a one out double from Nathan Brinkerhoff. He would later advance to second on a fielder’s choice. Then a two out single from Callahan would drive in Brinkerhoff and tie the game at two runs apiece.
In the fourth inning, both teams got runners on base, but WA was the only team that posed any threat to score. The Ghosts had two men reach base, Max Silverman and Dan Cornelius. This put runners on first and third base as Cornelius hit a base hit. Later in the the next bat, Cornelius would steal second base and that put two runners in scoring position with two outs. However, this surge of offense did not result in any runs and the score remained 2-2 after four innings.
Another offensive push came from both teams in the fifth inning, but Weston would be the only one to capitalize on those chances. Their half of the inning started out with a base hit and then a two run home run, which would give them a 4-2 lead. This home run would lead to a pitching change for the Ghosts and
Rohit Bhagavathula came in for Eddy. Weston would not score any more runs in their half of the inning, but they left a few runners stranded on base.
WA also generated a bit of offense in the bottom of the fifth inning when Tom Egan got a base hit and Tom Scaplen hit a double. The next batter was walked by a Weston pitcher, which loaded the bases for the Ghosts. The Ghosts however, could not get any runs across and the fifth inning ended with the score still 4-2 in favor of Weston.
Weston grabbed another run in the top of the sixth inning when they bunted for a base hit and then hit a double which brought home a run. This made the score 5-2. The Ghosts would not respond in the bottom of the sixth as Weston got three quick outs.
The Ghosts fell into a deeper hole in the top of the seventh inning when Weston grabbed three more runs off of several hits and RBIs increasing their lead from 5-2 to 8-2.
However, the Ghosts had one final push in the bottom of the seventh inning when both Michael Previte and Callahan singled, putting two runners on base. They both came around to score off of RBIs from Scaplen and Brian Anastas. This made the score 8-4 in favor of Weston. Although WA showed signs of life, they bounced into a double play to end the game.
Head coach Cory Roman thought his team for the most part, felt ready to play, but thought that their defensive play could have been better.
“There was a lot of energy, the guys played with a lot of enthusiasm […] We hit the ball OK today [We were] able to score four runs, unfortunately, some of our defense missed their spots and the other team took advantage of that and hit some good hits today,” said Roman.
