In the last game of this season, the Westford Academy Girl’s Varsity soccer team lost to Newton South this afternoon. After a first half of no goals, both teams rallied in the second half, ending the game with a score of 3-2.
Being the last game of the season excluding tournaments, the team and the crowd were looking forward to a win for WA.
“I go to Katie’s every game, home or away and,”said Michelle Long when commenting about the season, “the loss tonight was disappointing for a team that works so hard.”
During the first half, players from both teams played strongly, but no goals were made. As the second half approached, players increased their determination and frantically fought to score.
Junior Karly Bigham, made the first goal of the game at the beginning of the second half. Quickly following that goal, junior Molly Maclure scored WAGS’ second goal. At this point, WA’s team was in the lead by a score of 2-0, but Newton South was able to sneak in goal after goal within the last 20 minutes.
Throughout the entire game, the goalie for WA was Rebecca Strafstorm, who persistently blocked goal attempts by Newton South even after receiving a kick to the face. However, Newton South was finally able to achieve several scores.
The first goal made by Newton South was a rebound off of a defensive move during a corner kick and the second was an indirect kick at 5 yards. When it appeared that the game would end 2-2, Newton South scored yet again with only 5 minutes left.
The girls of WA played the last few minutes with extreme determination, but they were unable to recover from Newton South’s last goal.
“The [team] did well the first half, but during the second half, we had trouble continuing the attack on the opponent’s net […] and started to collapse defensively,” said Coach Tracy Capone.
This loss was disappointing, but the team will continue their hard work to prepare for their upcoming division one tournaments.
