The boys soccer team dominated Waltham 3-0 with help from a great showing on both offense and defense. The Ghosts have built off their last win after losing four straight, increasing their record to 5-1-4.
The game started off with a great deal of chances from the Waltham bench, where they put the defense to the test. Shane Kilday and Bryson Friedlander had outstanding performances, continuously shutting down their opponents star players. They had the will to grind out the dirty battles and seemed to keep the team in the game. Senior Goalie Brad Jones, who was playing in place of senior Sam Brewer, the regular goalie, also was tested on a few breaks, but was successful in breaking up each one. As the half wound to an end Westford Academy started to heat up and Brian Murray hammered in the first goal of the game with 2:55 left on the clock.
As the second half began, it was clear the Ghosts were fired up. The game had changed momentum completely and the Westford squad had a multitude of chances. Sophomore Ben Balian, had a fantastic outing in his first game back from an injury, aiding in a surplus of scoring opportunities. Six minutes into the half, Derek Jones, earned himself a fast break and shot low and hard past the goaltenders reach; creating a 2-0 lead.
Only ten minutes later, the ball was in Peter Hurley’s possession and he looked to make a cross pass to his teammate. Waltham’s opposing player in his attempts to deflect away, accidentally redirected it into his own net. With this goal, and only twenty-five minutes to play, Westford had a comfortable lead and continued to out play them. The Ghosts out shot Waltham twelve to five, further highlighting their dominance.
The Ghosts look forward to their next game against Boston-Latin who is having a respectable year so far. With a win like this, the boys’ soccer team is ready to show they have more wins to put on the board.
