The Westford Academy boys varsity lacrosse team dominated in their game against St. John’s Preparatory School at WA. WA started off strong and kept up the intensity throughout the game. In the end, WA took the win with a final score of 14 to 7.
Westford got off to a fast start with two goals by seniors Ben Rodman and Sam Frackleton in the first six minutes of the game. WA’s lead continued as junior Ryan McNabb and senior Jay Drapeau each scored one goal by the end of the first quarter.
“We started off the game just like we wanted to,” said senior goalie Peter Hargrave. “Our offense came out and put a couple in early and we had a few nice stops defensively which really helped us.”
With 10 minutes left in the second quarter, St. John’s Prep fought to get through WA’s defense and scored their first goal of the game.
Westford came back after the opposing team’s goal and ended the first half with a score of 9 to 2 with goals by junior Shane Kilday and seniors Ryan Hesseltine, Jay Drapeau and Scott McCord.
During the third quarter, Westford continued to keep the ball in the offensive end and scored 4 more goals, bringing the score up to 13 to 3.
WA’s defense broke down slightly in the fourth quarter and St. John’s Prep was able to score four more goals to bring their total goals to 7. Westford Academy was able to score one final goal to make the final score 14 to 7.
Overall, Westford’s defense was able to limit the amount of shots taken by the opposing team and keep them out of the defensive end. Starting defenders senior Will Puduski and junior Josh Hoock were able to stop multiple goal scoring opportunities made by the opposing team during the game.
Senior Jay Drapeau felt that the team did well as a whole overall and both the defense and offense played well throughout the game.
“Our defense played great holding them to only 2 goals in the first half. Our offense played well too scoring 14 goals,” said Drapeau. “It was a great team effort and everyone played well.”
Head Coach Matt Tholander was happy with the outcome of the game and felt both teams played hard.
“It was a great team effort by everybody on both sides of the field,” said Tholander. “We have a lot of depth and a lot of talent. It was another good team win.”
For the future, Tholander says he hopes to practice on improving the players’ conditioning and ball handling skills in order to excel in upcoming games.
