Often when a sports fan thinks abut Westford Academy, they think about hockey, lacrosse, football and a dominant girls’ tennis team. Boys’ tennis is not on that list. However, this year the team was a force to be reckoned with, finishing the regular season 13-3.
The team will move into the postseason with a talented upperclassmen-filled roster, which makes them confident heading into the highly competitive playoffs.
“I am more confident going into the tournament this year than any other year. We have some big competitors such as St. John’s prep and BC High School. But I believe we have a shot at beating their doubles teams and maybe even win a singles match,” said senior Alexander Bonnano.
In their matches, one team matches up three singles players and two doubles pairings with their opponent. So far in the season it has been the doubles teams that have been tantamount towards the team’s wins.
“We have no superstar that has led us this season and past years there has been a huge gap between first singles player and our second doubles team, but this year there is barely any at all. Since a team is as strong as its weakest player,” said Bonnano.
Similar to his senior teammate, junior David Colomb has seen how powerful their doubles teams have been.
“Definitely doubles [is the best], we only had one doubles loss all season. Doubles went 26-1,” said Colomb, a doubles player himself
