The food served at the cafeteria at Westford Academy will look very different this year and all can be attributed to the healthy eating initiative.
Everything from the pasta to the pizza to dessert will be created with more farm-fresh ingredients and whole grains.
“From this point on all of our grains will be 51% whole,” said cafeteria manager Colleen Wallace.
That new rule applies to the pizza, pasta, cookies, and wraps, which will be made of 49% white flour and 51% whole grain.
“This whole thing is a process towards a more farm to school idea. For example we get apples shipped to us from Drew farms,” said Wallace.
The change that has brought out the most anger from students however has been the snack bar. The sherbets and the double chocolate cookies have been removed from the a la carte counter.
The snack bar was a student favorite and one that brought in hundreds of revenue for the school.
“We’ve lost $200 a day [at the snack bar],” said Wallace.
It is clear that students are not responding well to the changes but students need to recognize the changes are forced upon to the lunch staff and they are doing their best to cope with the situation.
“We aren’t doing this to be mean. I hope students can keep an open mind an realize that the changes are for their benefit,” said Wallace.
Even the cafeteria staff can relate to students and how they miss their delicious desserts and are trying to appease them.
“I am talking to several ice cream vendors that produce ice cream that fits USDA regulations. I would like to see ice cream served again,” said Wallace
The changes are being brought upon by the USDA so students should recognize that this is not a movement to make students’ lunches worse.
“We aren’t trying to force kids to eat healthy but we want to get people familiar with healthier foods,” said Wallace.

Yeah, actually you know what “Disgruntled ” MOST people, kind of need to be hand fed fruits and vegetables. There were kids who ate a slice of pizza every single day with a soda or whatever from home for all four years. And this is not just one case. To be perfectly honest, most kid’s can’t even be quiet for two minutes without the teacher “SHUUUSSHHING” them. In high school you have to ask to go to the bathroom, and even with that kids still get in trouble for the dumbest things. Hardworking puppets for the government? You make me laugh. Honestly the staff caring about your heatlh is a bad thing now? There IS a choice for you, it is called “Bring your own lunch if they are such communists to give you healthy choices. The school lunch is actually fairly good if you have eaten anywhere except this upper class, well established school. Try living in a poorer area and see how you beg for these horrible force fed meals. Kids in Westford are spoiled beyond belief.

Yes, we the stupid children of the United States need to be hand fed our fruits and vegetables so we can become strong hardworking puppets for the government. Let us make our own decisions. We don’t need someone telling us what we SHOULD be eating. Also, the vegetables at this school are downright atrocious. And despite your best ‘intentions’ the school lunches are bad, even made worse by this nonsensical view of health, and you should feel bad.
