WA’s Student Council (STUCO) hosted the Westford community’s first-ever Polar Plunge on Tuesday, March 11 in the auxiliary parking lot. The event raised money for Special Olympics Massachusetts through individual and group fundraising, which was celebrated by nearly 100 people plunging into ice-cold water. STUCO initially aimed to raise $2500, but ultimately collected over $8000 that will go towards improving the quality of sports for athletes with intellectual developmental disabilities (IDDs).
In pairing with the Best Buddies Program, this event is one of the many steps WA is taking towards providing a more inclusive school and athletics program. Teams like Unified Track and Unified Basketball have already begun expanding the opportunities of students with IDDs, while fostering friendships amongst all students. After a successful event, WA hopes to keep the tradition running in the future.
