At the end of October, the Westford Academy Student Council (STUCO) undergoes its busiest season, hosting multiple events, including the Fall Semi-Formal (formerly called Homecoming), Spirit Week, Spirit Rally, and its newest addition, Trunk or Treat. This year, STUCO hosted its third annual Trunk or Treat event on Wednesday, Oct. 30, bringing not only high school students together but the whole community by allowing elementary school students to trick-or-treat from the trunks of WA groups, clubs, and organizations. Based on appearance and the interaction with the kids, here are the top 7 Trunk or Treat trunks this year.
- Relay for Life
Relay for Life was one of the most beautiful trunks of the night with a solid theme and creative decorations. Relay for Life’s trunk had a recognizable theme: the movie Tangled. Complete with colorful streamers, paper lanterns, a replica of the floating lights scene in Tangled, and a chalk drawing on the ground incorporating the colors purple and yellow, and a beautiful sun, the trunk can easily be distinguished from the other Halloween-themed trunks. The added emphasis with the purple clothing, combined with the cute little details such as Rapunzel’s chameleon Pascal and little flowers in the back, was the perfect touch that pushed Relay for Life’s trunk onto the list.
- WA Teammates
WA Teammates, a new Westford organization, was one of the more colorful and interactive trunks. Although simple, the trunk’s decorations get the job done with the multi-color drawings of various balls from different sports. As a new organization, the inclusion of papers with information and a QR code was helpful to interested parents and kids. WA Teammate’s goal is to connect Westford Academy athletes with Westford Youth athletes by pairing high school students with younger athletes so that the high school students can cheer the younger athletes on. Their trunk exemplified just that, as it promoted interaction between the founders and trick-or-treaters by allowing them to shoot a mini basketball into a basket.
- French Club
Returning to Trunk or Treat for its third year, French Club was one of the most spirited clubs with French flags, an interesting tablecloth, and assorted decorations compiled from the club members’ houses. Walking into Trunk or Treat, French Club’s trunk caught my attention with its large setup and fun decorations. When it comes to Trunk or Treat, French Club always goes all out, often with handmade decorations from club meetings. This year, their handmade decoration was a poster written in French, translating to “Stop, here is the empire of the dead. Happy Halloween! Boo.”
- Class of 2026
The Class of 2026’s trunk holds the title for most Halloween-themed with its spooky and spirited decorations. Complete with a color theme of purple, orange, and black, the trunk was one of the most decorated with skulls, a pumpkin, a skeletal bird, and gravestones. The purple garland, contrasting with the fun cobwebs and the trunk having the title of having the most candy, brought the trunk outside the top 3 trunks, though it was a difficult decision.
- Women in Stem
As one of the most detailed trunks at the event, Women in Stem earns the bronze medal on the list. With fun costumes and a variety of decorations, Women in Stem’s trunk was pleasing to the eye and clearly well-decorated. The combination of witch hats, ghosts, skulls, and hand-drawn decorations made this trunk stand out.
2. WA Softball
WA Softball hit it out of the park with their trunk. Despite having a simple car trunk, WA Softball’s trunk made it to second place on the list due to their fun and interactive setup.
Besides the car was a batting tee and net, for the trick-or-treaters to try their hand at something the team often does at practice. The kids took turns hitting a fun Halloween-themed ball off of the tee, allowing the high school athletes to form connections with them and also expose them to softball.
1. Books for Brighter Futures
With a fun, creative, and colorful theme, the new club Books for a Brighter Future takes the cake for first place. Looking at the trunk, it is clear that a lot of hard work was put into it.
The multicolored balloons, fun pathways, and fake candies almost seem to transform the setup into a real-life version of the popular board game Candy Land. The colorful paper stepping stones make the trunk nearly interactive, and these combined aspects of creativity and interaction put the trunk at the top of the list.
