A Fashion Column: Fashion week should be every week

by Catherine Pears

Co-Editor-in-Chief

We are in the midst of Fashion Week, and although there are only three days left, I am still jealous of the well-dressed, well-groomed New Yorkers sitting front row.

Not that I would be invited to Fashion Week if I did live in New York City. Last year, two, now infamous, then unknown, teenagers managed to dress the part and sneak into runway shows. If only I had a few pairs of Louboutins…

The fact that fashion week comes in February but is showcasing the designer’s Fall 2011 collections never seems to deter anyone. Although, the wonderful weather we’ve been having has made me look forward to spring sandals more than ever. Speaking of, fashion week in Fall 2010, which confusingly was showcasing collections for Spring 2011 (get it?) revealed a common trend of flat sandals. I don’t think I will be able to give up espadrilles for the entire summer but knowing that there will be an abundant selection of sandals other than Old Navy flip-flops brings much relief.

Let us not forget that there are other things going on outside our little US of A bubble. Fashion weeks are also being held in Milan and Paris. Whilst looking at the designer list for NY Fashion Week, I somehow forgot this for a moment and was very concerned as to why Chanel and Yves Saint Laurent were not showing. Had the most infamous fashion brands decided to rebel? Sadly, or thankfully, no. No, the fashion world is not as exciting as I daydream it to be.

Or is it?

Many designers have shown long skirts in their Pre-Fall collections. Chloe showed floor-grazing velvet pants and mid-calf neon skirts, but long silouettes are nothing new. In Fall of 2010, we were told that long skirts were the new mini- not that many of us paid attention. (It’s kind of difficult to wear a floor length chiffon skirt when you’re 5’3).

However, the trend seems to be lasting through to fall. For summer, the length will continue with flowy skirts perfectly combined with a warm summer breeze- just not denim, because those are still not attractive. And they do not blow in the breeze.

The latest designer to showcase in NYC, BCBG, yet again, provided length. They also showed a lot of turtlenecks and although I am not the biggest fan of turtlenecks and the idea of wearing one certainly disrupts my beach-ridden day dreams, BCBG’s styling and fresh designs forced me to take a double take. Written next to the photo, “the collection was rich with thin turtlenecks,”… what turtlenecks? I hadn’t even noticed them lying there underneath the sheer, fly away dresses.

Check back later for a recap on what went down at the end of fashion week. Including designers Betsey Johnson, Vera Wang, and Anna Sui.
