A Fashion Column: Sheer Cheer

By Catherine Pears
Co-Editor-in-Chief

Sheer sleeve dress by Sugarhill Boutique from ModCloth.com

After all my friends left me standing in the middle of my dining room, surrounded by chocolate chip cookies with peanut butter cup centers, sugary frosted “Merry Christmas” cakes, and half-baked brownies slathered in chocolate frosting, I had a weary feeling about the week to come.

As the only precious child of my parents, all of these delicious desserts would have to be eaten by me. However, I was not to be defeated. I was up for the challenge. Walking into my kitchen, I fingered the chocolate frosting embedded into the tweed stitching of my dress and began the endless process of cleaning up the cups, plates, and half eaten breadsticks from the Christmas party.

My alternate apparel option was a multicolored body con dress with sheer black sleeves and a sheer back. I did not think this was very appropriate for a holiday dinner party. However, stores have been able to make the sheer-black-come-hither-but-not-in-a-creepy-way look acceptable to wear over the holiday season.

Dresses that incorporate the newly-popular sheer trend allow the wearer to show some skin while not pulling a “let’s wear flip flops in January.” Dresses with sheer sleeves are a great way to wear the trend while not freezing to death.

An always popular choice during the holidays is velvet. Velvet can get a bad rep for being the choice dress among 7 year old pageant winners, but I’m not talking about the poofy sleeved dresses with lace detailing. Nowadays velvet dresses are taking on a new look. With shorter hemlines and back cut-outs, the traditional fabric is becoming more vintage-retro than 4th-grade look-a-like.

This holiday season, try incorporating either velvet or sheer (or both!) into your wardrobes (and maybe skipping out on the usual Uggs and leggings). My most recent endeavor has been to transform and old velvet paint suit of my mom’s into a high waisted skirt. Hopefully after I finish all of these desserts, it will still fit.

Stay classy Westford Academy. See you next year.
