A Fashion Column: Boots that Don’t Rhyme with “Rugs”

by Catherine Pears
Editor-in-Chief

Mondays are always difficult, but last Monday was particularly tedious for me. Throughout every class, I sat, imagining what would be waiting for me when I returned home. After a seemingly endless seven minute car ride, my eyes searched for anything different on my doorstep. Nothing was there. My heart sank, my eyes dropped, and I dragged myself into my house. For the next two hours, I sulked, watching Season 2 of Keeping Up with the Kardashians and eating from an infinite bowl of popcorn, wondering if UPS tracker had been lying to me for the past week and a half.

However, I knew those beautiful, brown-jump-suited-men would never let me down. Interrupting one of Kim’s meltdowns, I heard my doorbell ring. I threw off the many blankets that were wrapped around myself, and ran to the door (after falling more times than I wish to specify). In front of me, the beautiful camel colored box was waiting with its arms outstretched.

Not exactly. The top right corner was smushed in, and there were water stains on the bottom, but when I opened that box and pulled out its contents, the mud that was being embedded into my rug was the last thing on my mind.
The two pairs of boots that I had (not) been patiently awaiting, had arrived. The first, a pair of ankle cut, suede, sage-colored booties that would go perfectly with a pair of dark blue denim jeans or a summer dress transformed for fall with a pair of tights. I imagined wearing the second pair, brown leather, lace up, heeled boots, whilst strolling through cobblestone streets in Boston, with a steaming latte in hand.

As the autumn leaves scatter on the ground, they seem to bring with them a need for matching warm-colored boots to walk on top of them. Although I refuse to mention the most common choice of footwear for girls between the months of November and March, (rhymes with tugs or bugs or rugs) a more varied form of boot is leaking into the most popular, main stream stores.

I’m talking about combat boots. The military trend can be dated all the way back to 2008, but it doesn’t look like it’s going anywhere. A better choice for school than heeled cowboys boots, (because who really enjoys that clacking sound echoing down the hallway) combat boots can range from conservative to Gaga-esque.

Although most tend to be lace up, combat boots can have buckles, or straps. They can be tall or short, ruched or leather, some heeled and polished, and others intended to look like they were actually used in combat.

Contrary to the difficult-to-pull-off (not that I attempted) thigh high boots of last winter, combat boots are extremely comfortable and can be paired with anything from a short, frilly cocktail dress to army green cargo pants.

Stay classy Westford Academy.
