Welcome Ms. Sloane

Lauren Cullen

Staff Writer

Nicole Sloane, a member of the student support staff here at Westford Academy, says she thinks WA is a great community to work in.

“This is my first year here at WA and so far it’s been great,” Sloane said.

Sloane attended the University of New Hampshire where she majored in psychology and then went on to Lesley University for her master’s degree in education.  However, Sloane says she says she did not always want to be a teacher.

“I majored in psychology at UNH, and then I went into the non-profit organization world after college,”said Sloane.

She was involved in Big Brothers Big Sisters for a few years and then decided to go back into teaching.

Aside from a few cousins and an aunt, Sloane says the idea to go into teaching was entirely her own.

Since the age of 3, she was involved in volunteering at the Special Olympics, which she says was “A natural fit.” Because of those experiences, Sloane went into student support teaching to help the students who need more help in school.

Everyday, Sloane keeps busy by teaching a math class, meeting with parents, collaborating with other teachers, and most of all, helping the students she has with their IEP’s. An IEP is an individualized education plan.

Sloane says she considers her relationship with her students to be different than other teachers because she works with them differently.

There isn’t anything she doesn’t like about the job.

Sloane said,  “I wanted to go into teaching, so there’s not really something that I don’t look forward to.”

Sloane’s favorite part of the job is working with her students and meeting new people at Westford Academy.

Outside of WA, Sloane likes to work out, spend time with family and friends, especially with her two-twin nephews and four month old niece.

Overall, Sloane’s first days at WA have been positive.

“This school is  great and exciting to work in everyday,” she said.
