Elizabeth Britton Rises Above

Aditi Patel

Staff Writer

Elizabeth Britton is an intelligent and artistic senior. Known as Lizzy by her peers and teachers, she is adored by them all. Britton is also the valedictorian, or the student who achieved the highest GPA of the graduating class of 2011. It is a great and elusive honor.
Britton said that she didn’t think that she’d be valedictorian when she started high school, although it had been a dream of hers. She has always been a hard worker in school.

So, when she found out that she was valedictorian it felt surreal.

Britton describes her self-motivation and hard work as the cause for her academic success.

“At heart I’m a shameless nerd and I really enjoy school,” said Britton.

Instead of trying to impress others with her grades, she set goals that would make her happy and met those standards. Working to her goals makes the success fulfilling and rewarding.

According to Britton, her favorite and best subject is art. She is passionate about it and dedicated most of her time and effort to it, too. The students in advanced art classes are passionate about art, and it was this environment that allowed Britton to be a successful artist.

“I got to explore my own interests rather than absorb material chosen by others,” said Britton.
Despite it being a proven fact that Britton is extremely talented, she remains a modest person.

“I don’t really think of myself as valedictorian, like I have so many friends who are so much smarter than I am. It was really strange,” said Britton.
Now that Britton is graduating, she feels as if she is done with a big chapter in her life. She will be attending the University of Pennsylvania next year. This will be a whole new world for Britton, and her classes will be filled with talented kids from all over the US.

“On some level, my high school achievements will be a different part of my life. I hope though, that this is some indication that I will succeed next year and further down the line,” said Britton.

Before leaving WA, Britton imparts some wisdom onto other younger high schoolers. Britton described that she always had a full and taxing schedule, but she made sure that it was made up of predominately classes that she enjoyed and didn’t mind dedicating herself to. She made sure that she took art and music every year. Britton even took AP Art twice, both in junior and senior years. She preferred humanities over math and science, so she took more of those classes.

“Find what you want to do, what you’re passionate about, and do it well,” said Britton
