It’s almost that time again when the noisemakers come out and you can find the true WA Superfans screaming their heads off front row. That’s right, it’s almost basketball season.

Last season Westford Academy had an amazing record of 10-0 in the DCL large and a record of 19-2 overall. However, they had a devastating loss in the playoffs to Belmont.

This year they look to rebound and rebuild, capitalizing on some of the younger talent that they had last year.

Last year’s DCL all star TJ Jann said regarding another DCL championship, “every season we go in thinking were going to win it, we expect to win it.”

Although the team has lost their two other all-stars Alex Haines and Peter Lynch, Jann does not seem worried about the season. Jann says, “I am really looking foreword to playing with some other really good players this year.”

Perimeter skill will likely play a major role in the success of the team this year complimented by some great underclassmen.

Junior Mark Cornelius and sophomore Matt Ellis look to have another great year and bring athleticism and quickness to the team.

Coach Ed Scollan was also very optimistic about the upcoming season.

Regarding the loss of Peter Lynch and Alex Haines, Scollan says, “they’ll be hard to replace, but yet that is the nature of high school basketball.”

With the loss of much height Scollan also expects that the team will need to bring “more of a team rebounding aspect to the game.”

As with every year in the DCL the competition is tough. It does not look as if there will be any games handed to Westford Academy, but Scollan is confident in his team this year.

“One of the goals we have is a DCL championship and another is to repeat as Greater Lowell Holiday Tournament champions and we’ll see as the season develops,” said Scollan.
