Students Angry Over No-Sign Policy for Pep Rally

Stefanie Doucette
staff writer

This year, Westford Academy administration made the controversial ban of all student made signs during the pep rally on October 23. video after jump.

The signs have always been a tradition of Westford Academy pep rallies. They boost inter-class competition and upperclassman dominance by mocking the scandals and embarrassing antics of other grades – usually freshmen.

However, this year, administration decided to take a stand against such signs that they have always deemed offensive. For the first time, no student made signs were allowed out onto the football field during this year’s pep rally.

Students were angry about the change, though. The general consensus was that signs made the pep rally better and should have been allowed.

I understand that the whole point of a pep rally is to rig it so that the seniors win, but where’s the fun in that? Winning is only fulfilling if it’s based on your efforts. A victory based on cheating doesn’t taste as sweet. Also, aren’t pep rallies supposed to get the grades to pull together? The demeaning, crass, and hurtful signs really broke the message of unity -which is all the pep rallies are really trying to convey. The events aren’t about brute strength or intellect. Partakers won if they had enough support from their grades. I like the idea of rallying for our fellow peers. Why do we have to tarnish the moment by mud-slinging at the opposition?
