Westford Academy and Boston Latin faced off on Monday, January 18th, at Skate 3 on a chilly afternoon. The game ended with a final score of 8-3, in favor of Boston Latin.

Boston-Latin certainly did not waste any time, as they scored a goal in the first few seconds. The excitement in the first period was almost palpable, encouraged by a strong fan section. The excitement lead to a heated altercation between BL’s Will Ahern and WA’s Matt Ricci. Boston Latin followed up the quick start with another three goals.

Boston Latin controlled play during the first period, and most of the action was around the WA net. The Ghosts did have a few scoring chances, but they spent most of the period in their own end. WA goalie Roger Carter put up a valiant effort, but the strong BL offense had control after the first period.

The score at the end of the first period was 4-0, with Boston Latin in the lead.

After the break, WA came back with renewed energy. Junior Eric McLaughlin scored the first goal of the period, restoring hope for the WA fans. However, Boston-Latin soon responded with another goal of their own.

Sophomore Chris Blouin scored WA’s second goal of the game, which was assisted by Eric McLaughlin. This would cut their deficit down to three. After another Boston-Latin goal, the Ghosts put another one on the board to make the score 6-3. The second half of the period was even, with not many shot attempts for either side and a lot of back and forth play.

The second period was a revival for the WA team. Play was all over the ice, and WA dramatically increased their offensive play. They recovered well from the shock of the first period, and were much improved on both sides of the ice. The second period came to an end with Boston-Latin up 6-3.

The third period started off with an early BL goal, but WA’s net minder Roger Carter held his own, to make a great saves. The Ghosts continued to work for another goal, but all of their chances were denied by the strong BL defense. As the game came to a close, WA started to get into some penalty trouble, and by the end of the game, they found themselves on a 5-3 penalty kill.

WA pushed hard during the third, but the team seemed to be worn out. Boston Latin’s early lead set the tone of the game, and the Ghosts never fully recovered. The game ended with a final score of 8-3, in favor Boston Latin.

This game makes the Boy’s record 0-10.
