When it seems as if Disney could not make the classic tale of Cinderella any better, it does just that. Released on March 13th, Cinderella encompasses the magic of the original film and adds more charm than ever before.

In this version of Cinderella, Cinderella’s mother and father teach her to not only see the world as it is, but as it could be.  Differing from the classic cartoon version, the character of Cinderella’s mother is developed.  The film uses the mother’s character to stress the importance of being kind and courageous. Cinderella stays true to a promise to her mother by being courageous and kind.

After both of her parents die and her life is taken over by her conniving stepmother, Cinderella remains hopeful and true to herself.

The film provides audiences with some insight on the cruelty of her stepmother and step-sisters.  Cinderella did not even become “Cinderella” until “Cinder-” was added to her actual name, Ella.  This name derives from her face being covered in cinders after sleeping by the fire.

In addition to expanding Cinderella’s inner turmoil and the treatment she receives from her new “family”, the film reveals a reason behind the madness.  Although it provides no pardon for the stepmother’s actions, audiences learn why she acts the way she does.

Even though there is an immense sadness surrounding Cinderella’s seemingly hopeless fate, Disney maintains the hopeful atmosphere and continuous elements of magic present in the original story.

The glittering aura of the fairy godmother and the kindness and blindingly white teeth of prince charming show audiences that there is some hope in Cinderella’s future.  On the night of the royal ball, the special effects make audiences feel apart of the beautiful transformation of Cinderella and as if they are getting ready to step into the golden carriage.

Differing from the classic tale, this new version makes audiences feel immersed in Cinderella’s story.  It cannot compare to the original, but Disney successfully carried out the transformation from cartoon to live action while maintaining the major lessons and elements of magic.  The actors, costume designers, and film settings collaborate to enhance the overall experience of the movie.  Lily James brings Cinderella to life and the rest of the cast performs excellently as supporting characters.

The special effects, greater development of characters, and overall lessons will make this film among one of Disney’s classics.  It inspires audiences to believe in kindness, courage, and view the world not as it is, but as it could be.

8/10
