The WA track team won in a home meet for both girls’ and boys’ against Waltham on Wednesday, April 24th. The boys dominated with a total score of 83 that more than doubled Waltham’s score of 41, and girls’ track won with a score of 54 to 32.

This meet, about halfway through the spring track season, was unlike many of the other meets, with only two schools running. WA, in many of the events, crushed Waltham, with many scores of 9-0. In track, first place is 5 points, second place is 3 points, and third place is 1 point.

For boys’ track, events they were strong in were the high hurdles, the mile, 300 meter low hurdles, and the pole vault. In girls’ track, events such as the 100 meter and the pole vault were also all won 9 to 0.

During this meet, many people, such as junior Jon Miller, surpassed their original personal record times, and others made it onto varsity track.

The going to be captain of 2013-2014 winter track season, Miller,  ran his event, the mile, in 4 minutes and 46 seconds, beating his old personal record, 4 minutes and 54 seconds, by almost 10 seconds.

“The meet went well, and nothing beats blowing away your old [personal record],” said Miller.

Freshman Shyam Bhagat, made it onto the varsity team after running in the two mile event. He ran it in 11 minutes and 47 seconds and got 3rd place which qualified him for varsity. His personal record for the two mile was 11 minutes and 18 seconds. Bhagat was also on the varsity team for winter track.

“It wasn’t a great race for me personally, but I got third place, so I’m not too upset…This season has been a tough one. We’re winning meets, but there have been a lot of injuries,” said Bhagat.

This season for track, there have been a few injuries for runners, some lasting for a week or less, and in more serious injuries, the rest of the season. Freshman Julianna Clina was injured earlier and is now unable to run for the rest of the season.

“I was really looking forward to running this season, but because of my injury I can’t. I still come to every meet though, cause I can still cheer my team on,” said Clina.

Angela Lee, also a freshman at WA, commented on the competitiveness of the meet.

“I did track before in middle school, and this is my first time coming to a high school meet. It seems a lot more competitive,” said Lee.
